You know that smell, the one that as you are going about your day and you catch a hint of it as it breezes past you, and it instantly takes you back to a sweet moment of days gone by? The scent that transports you to another time and place entirely. For me that happens anytime I smell lavender, magnolia and lily-of-the-valley.
For me, that memory was formed when I was 7 years old, playing in the wooded area between our’s and our neighbour’s homes, with my friend Jenna. We were collecting any sort of flower we could get our hands on, so that we could mix them with hose water in my mom’s old perfume bottles, which we sold on the corner in lieu of lemonade. This is how our quasi-successful perfume business began. Now looking back our neighbours were more likely being kind to support our entrepreneurial efforts, rather than having the deep desire to own a bottle of A&J’s Eau du Flower (a.k.a.: Flowery Water). But still, now still every whiff of those florals I am taken back to that feeling of adventure and accomplishment.
We have all heard adage that the “sense of smell is most closely linked with memory,” but how often do we allow ourselves to stop and fully appreciate that memory for the gift it can be? And furthermore, how often do we take the time to stop and smell and create new lasting memories for the future? Why don’t we stop and smell the happiness?
So here is what I am thinking—let’s make our regular, would-be mundane, daily tasks, and liven them up with a little scent happiness. Scents are proven to improve your mood and productivity, so I thought adding in a new scent to my routine would be just the lift I needed—first step: laundry.
My family has always been a fan of Gain; I remember when I was younger smelling the different detergents in the grocery store aisle, and picking out my favourite. Gain detergent has always smelled the best, and lasted the longest throughout the day. In fact, the only time I remember my Dad having an opinion on laundry, was him asking my mom to specifically get more Gain.
The exciting news is Gain has created their brand-new Botanique line featuring 2 scents White Tea & Lavender and Orange Blossom Vanilla. These nature-inspired scents are 65% plant-based formula and are free of dyes, as well as chlorine, phosphates and optical brighteners, so not only will the scents make you feel good, you can feel good about using it. These scents are bringing the outdoors, indoors so you can imagine yourself outside of the laundry room, and be taken away while doing laundry so that you can stop and smell the happiness in your daily life.
Earlier this month, I went to Eaton Centre to check out the new line, and I was pleasantly surprised, along with many others. Want to know how shoppers reacted to the new smells? Check out this video below.
