TBT: Yves Saint Laurent

Fashions fade, style is eternal. – Yves Saint Laurent

This week marks what would have been Yves’ 78th birthday. Launching his label in 1961, he became one of the most influential designers of all time. Noted for saying, “Chanel freed women, and I empowered them,” Yves Saint Laurent is responsible for creating many pieces that changed the face of fashion, including: Le Smoking tuxedo, the Mondrian shift, the trapeze dress, the safari jacket, the see-through dress and more. His melding of masculine and feminine aesthetic was groundbreaking, and these designs were for the first time available to the masses as he was the first designer to create a prêt-à-porter line called Rive Gauche

Dressing is a way of life. – Yves Saint Laurent

I had the privilege of seeing the Yves Saint Laurent retrospective at the deYoung Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco in 2009. Being in a room with all these iconic pieces was literally breathtaking. His vast inspiration for his pieces, and attention to detail were extremely provoking.

Take a look through some of Yves Saint Laurent’s most iconic looks…

#TBT: Barbie and All Her Wonderful Fashion

I don’t know why, but this week I have been nostalgic for my childhood, and everything connected to it. This nostalgia is the inspiration for this week’s Throwback Thursday! My best friend growing up, Robyn, and I would spend hours styling all our dolls, setting our Barbie houses just so, and creating lavish tales of the lives of Barbie, Ken and all their friends. There are a few specific generations of Barbie’s that hold a special place in my heart, all of which I was reminded of as I researched this post.

Some fun Barbie Facts:

1. Her full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts
2. Her birthday is March 9, 1959 and is from Willows, Wisconsin.
3. The Best selling Barbie doll ever was 1992′s ‘Totally Hair’ doll, with hair from the top of her head to her toes {I had this one!}
4. Barbie has had 150+ careers.
5. In 2004 Barbie and Ken broke up after 43 years together, however they got back together on Valentine’s Day 2011.
6. Over the years, Barbie has had seven siblings: Skipper, Stacie, Chelsea, Krissy, Kelly, Tutti, and Todd.

7. In 2004, after breaking up with Ken, she had a rebound relationship with Blaine, an Australian surfer.
8. Barbie has represented more than 40 different nationalities
9. Barbie® doll’s collection of couture includes designs by Givenchy, Versace, Dolce & Gabana, Vera Wang and Gucci. {See these in the Slideshow}

Take a look through the history of Barbie—see which ones you remember, which inspire you, and what pieces you want to steal from her wardrobe!
